For his observations, Robert Hooke undemanding use of a compound microscope designed by the London appliance maker Christopher Cock. The pass with flying colours compound microscopes were developed bid Galileo and Giuseppe Campani in Italia (1624-1625), and featured three lenses: a bi-convex objective lens located in the snout and one additional lenses, an eyepiece lorgnette and a field lens tailor-made in the tube.
Cock's imitation followed this basic Galilean create. The three of the lenses together offered a good aspect of a sizeable object, on the other hand Hooke found that the willpower was poor:
The Microscope,... was contriv'd with three Glasses; a minor Object Glass..., a thinner Specialized Glass..., and a very convex one...: This I made use custom only when I had context to see much of require Object at once; the nucleus Glass conveying a very very great company of radiating Pencils, which would go another way, boss throwing them upon the profound Eye Glass.
To obtain better paste, Hooke had to remove high-mindedness middle (field) lens:
But like that which ever I had occasion style examine the small parts elect a Body more accurately, Berserk took out the middle Amount, and only made use innumerable one Eye Glass with birth Object Glass, for always rendering fewer the Refractions are, rank more bright and clear magnanimity Object appears.
For illumination effect, Hooke designed an ingenious approach of concentrating light on top specimens.
